Cerro Chato
When you think of volcanoes in Costa Rica, the first thing that comes to mind is Arenal Volcano , probably the most famous and spectacular volcano in all of Costa Rica. Although not many of us know about the little brother Arenal Volcanoes, Cerro Chato or Volcán Chato. Many photos of Arenal include Chato but it is certainly not obvious that it is actually a volcano. This is because it is more of a hill, not tall at all compared to its big brother.
According to history books, the Chato Volcanoes first eruption was about 38,000 years ago, and then again 3500 years ago. This was the most important eruption of the small volcano, as it formed the now well-known La Fortuna waterfall. The waterfall is an impressive attribute of the volcano and adds that much more for you to see in the area.
The Volcán Chato is 1140 meters or (3740 feet) high and its lagoon is approximately 500 meters wide full of turquoise volcanic waters.
Hiking the Chato trails: Hiking up Chato Volcano is not recommended for everyone. It is a raw hiking experience and the trails are steep with no handrails or ropes to help. Although if you like adventure this is perfect for you. Trails to either the Arenal Observatory lodge, or the Greenlagoon Lodge. The hike takes about 1-2 hours to complete whichever way you go, so be sure to pack a snack and some sunscreen. Each trail is almost full of roots, rocks, and has a steep incline. All the way up you will be impressed by the scenery, which gives you magnificent views. Once you reach the top, you will see the Chato Volcano lagoon.
The hike is quite difficult to complete so if you are willing to take small children or those in poor health it is best to see the volcano from a different viewpoint.
Activities
Luckily hiking is far from the only thing to do in the area. Actually, if you want some real adventure you should go on the Arenal canopy tour. Ziplining is a cool way to see the region of the two volcanoes. After ziplining, you can then try your hand at horseback riding. This is the perfect way to navigate through the trails, as you can let the horse do all the work. While riding along you can see all the plants and wildlife that Costa Rica has to offer.
One of the most relaxing and refreshing experiences in Arenal is the incredible hot springs. You can enjoy the hot springs at places like The Springs, Tabacon and Baldi Resort. These are also some of the best places to stay if you want a luxury trip to Costa Rica.
