Lake Arenal

Lake Arenal is one of the three best places in the world for windsurfing, along with Lake Garda in Italy and the George River in the United States.

If we are talking about places with natural beauty, Costa Rica stands out for being one of the world’s ecological paradise destinations. It occupies 19,929 square miles, which represents only 0.1% of the world’s land mass, but is home to 5% of the world’s diversity. Its terrain is embellished by lush rainforests, volcanoes, rivers, beaches and majestic lakes, among which Lake Arenal in La Fortuna of Costa Rica stands out.

The Lake Arenal is located at the base of the colossal volcano of the same name. For its surface it is the largest lake in the country. It is approximately 30 km long and almost 5 km at its widest point, with an area of 85 square kilometers. The area surrounding the lake is as inspiring as the water itself, surrounded by incredible landscapes, rocky slopes and dense mountains. This makes it an ideal destination if you are visiting the picturesque town of La Fortuna in Costa Rica.

Origin of Lake Arenal: Lake Arenal originated by tectonic movements that created a small depression in the Arenal Valley 2 to 3 million years ago. Which filled with water, resulting in a small lagoon, which acted as the initial area for the Arenal Lake in La Fortuna Costa Rica.

In 1973, the lake was enlarged by the Costa Rican Electricity Institute, since that date the flow was increased three times to become a hydroelectric project, which currently produces 40% of the energy consumed in Costa Rica.

An important fact to highlight is that, during the expansion of Lake Arenal, the communities of Arenal Viejo and Tronadora were totally flooded, reason why their inhabitants had to be moved to other towns.
